Alfa Romeo will build just 500 units of the 8C Spider, the ragtop version of the limited edition 8C Competizione coupe sports car. The 8C Spider will be unveiled on March 4 at the Geneva auto show and will go on sale by spring 2009. Production of the 8C Competizione began in September 2007 and its limited 500-unit run will be completed early next year. The 8C models will lead the Italian sports car brand's return to the United States.
Although Alfa Romeo had received almost 2,000 orders for the 8C Competizione, production was limited to the initially planned 500 units.The same limited run is confirmed for the 8C Spider, which will be considerably more expensive than the coupe it is derived from.
Alfa has not announced yet the price of the 8C Spider. It is expected to be close to 200,000 euros. The 8C Competizione costs 165,000 euros in Italy.A concept car previewing the 8C Spider was unveiled in August 2005 at the Pebble Beach Concourse d'Elegance in Monterey, California.
The 8C Competizione and 8C Spider are based on a Maserati Granturismo shortened platform. They use an Alfa version of Maserati's 405hp 4.2-liter V-8 engine with displacement increased to 4.7 liters and horsepower to 450hp.
