According to german car magazine Auto Motor und Sport which made this news known to its readers, Mercedes and Fiat could easily condescend with each other within months.
Mercedes spokesman declared to the Reuters: "We don't exclude (collaboration accords) categorically and we are in cooperation with others. We will entertain them if they make sense in certain fields and certain areas.” However Reuters said the spokesman declined to discuss Fiat. Meantime Luca Cordero di Montezemolo was quoted by the API italian news agency as saying: „"There are contacts with Mercedes, as with other automakers. I discussed them today with Sergio Marchionne. Obviously, it is premature to talk about alliance.” – he said.
Daimler AG recently unpicked its merger with Chrysler, and is in urgent need of partners to assist with its future platform requirements. Top of Daimler AG’s attentions include its plans for the next-generation A- and B-Class. Accord-ing to precedent Fiat is very strong in these segments, and if this joint-venture get a green light, Fiat would get the floorpan of the A and B class Mercedes, and Fiat would encompass the platform of the new E class to build the new 166 to it.
